Not just 'apocalyptic', but also likely prophetic, given the state of current affairs.

That was my inspiration. I wanted something not alien-related but thoroughly man-made and rareb suggested spinning out the worst consequences of the current state of affairs. I agreed, and thus she saved the story ;)
