I think it was the best place to start, actually. I knew most of the characters because the trilogy is set just a few years after the movies. I'm going to read in order from then on, and then go back to the very beginning and read up to the movies.
ETA: And I really liked the trilogy. I thought Thrawn was a little too strongly written, honestly. The fact that he was ALWAYS anticipating them got a bit annoying. And I don't want Mara to end up with Luke even though I know she does. But I always ship the hopeless ships anyway.
