as someone else put it better than I could:
_On this day (at least, an hour from now by my clock), we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the flight of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who, on April 12, 1961, became the first man to orbit the earth. He blazed the trail for the future of the human exploration and conquest of space. May his memory live on in our hearts and minds, to inspire us to further our knowledge of and dominion over the universe!

Rest in Peace, Yuri Gagarin. _

Yuri Gargarin was one of my childhood heroes, along with Valentina Terezhkova and Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg. Yesterday, a German PBC station interviewed random people on the street and there were really people who didn't know that name. It made me very, very, very sad to hear that and I'm so happy that rodlox remembered the day as well and actually posted something for it! I knew I wasn't alone :D

The sad thing is: I didn't remember either, until I read it in the newspaper yesterday. That it's the 50th anniversary, I mean, not who Gargarin was ;) I always knew that.

But I wish I knew earlier about the anniversary. I could have made a cake for work and there would have been fic! Oh well... I'll just... make this the year of the anniversary and I'll bake a cake and write fic for it sometime this month. Is that a good plan?

They should have celebrated Laika's trip into space as well, even though the dog didn't actually make it there alive. It was the start of a new age. Oh well...
