when I say gen I fucking mean gen. Not McShep, not any other slash, not even het. Please, for the love of God, fucking stop reccing me stuff that does not correspond with what I'm asking for. I honestly don't know how to say this anymore without outrightly offending you slashers but if this - you reccing me slash although I specifically ask for het or gen, I mean - happens ever again, you will see this in every damn single future request and screw the rules:

Please do not rec me slash. Under no circumstances I want to see a slash rec for this request. Slash recs will be ignored or maybe snarked at, if I feel in the mood. When I want slash, I will let you know. As long as I don't, I do not want to read slash, okay? Okay? Can you please respect that? You're always asking for people to respect slashers, so can you slashers please also respect people who do not want to read slash? I respect you. I don't rec het or gen if you definitely want slash. I don't rec you Lorne/Cadman when you want McShep. I don't rec you OCs when you want McShep. I don't rec you Marines when you want McShep.* So please do not rec me slash (and most of all, most of all, do not ever rec me McShep. I loathe it with the fire of a thousand suns) when I say that I fucking don't want to read it! Read. The fucking. Post.

No love, me.

*Because you know, that seems to be all they're ever asking for. I rejoice for every request that isn't McShep. And yes, this is my journal, I can say whatever the fuck I want here.

I always feel like us gen-folk are a severe minority. But then I also think: we're probably just not as vocal.

The funny thing is: slashers, who clearly are a majority in most fandoms, keep complaining about those "privileged" (don't get me started on that crappy approach to discussion...) het writers and how poor and oppressed slash writers and readers are. And it's all a fucking load of bullshit (again, in most fandoms).

But honestly, every single time I request something at [livejournal.com profile] sgagenrefinders and even (politely) tell them that I do not want slash and most of all no McShep, there's at least one reccer (and usually more) who seems to be totally oblivious to the fact that my request was perfectly clear and understandable and will rec slash (usually McShep), anyway.

Privileged? Why would het writers be privileged? And why do they feel oppressed?

That is rather odd.. to say the least.. I do know a fandom in which gen/slash are close together, but that's because the writers write it like that. And I'm not even talking about Supernatural :p It is a shame though, because the reason I don't read fanfic is because I am a gen-girl and all I can ever find was and is slash or ship stories. Privileged and oppressed? yeah right.

I think what's happening there is that some slashers (because, to be fair, not everyone is like that... only, apparently, the most vocal ones...) mix up fandom and real life. Heteronormativity is still the prevailing concept in real life, so some apparently aren't able to distinguish the privilege heteronormativity has in real life from the privilege slashers have in fandom. Their simple equation seems to be "LGBT people are non-privileged IRL = slash is non-privileged in fandom".

Basically, all that privilege crap and the labeling sucks mighty lemons. It usually ends up with people not wanting to be a majority, because majority equals privilege equals not having the right to criticize (hence, some slashers not wanting to see that they are the majority in fandom). It's honestly the worst approach to discussion I ever encountered.

That's the only thing I could think of too, but it just makes no sense to me. Fandom is real life at times, but also so different. There is no het/gay issue, so why call on that in this discussion? It just makes no sense to me. It is sad it is still there, specifically since many slash fans are het girls in real life.

Yep... that goes well with the whole "we have to protect minorities (because we believe they can't do that themselves but we won't say that)" thing that usually goes with the privilege crap.

What I also don't like is that discussions like this usually involve people saying "I (Caucasian cis female) blablabla" and there's nothing more ridiculous than obviously having to label yourself in an environment that allegedly fights against labelling and stereotypes...

Haha yeah I know what you mean. I wish things like this were just normal, you know? That people didn't even have to think: oh but I am female and caucasian, so in this discussion I will be seen as this or that. It just sad society still thinks in diversity instead of in 'we're all human'. But such is this earth, sadly.

not on LJ, but someone once tried to convince me that he was right purely because he was part of a historically-persecuted group*.
I very calmly replied "I'm a Germano-Russo-Welsh Jew. I win."

he never again tried to tell people that we shouldn't argue with him (no matter what the subject matter was) just because of what group he was a part of.

* = part of a group trying to revive the Cathars, I think. it's been 7 or more years.

they (that comm) should go to Primeval_Denial...het, gen, and slash readers and writers all get along splendidly.

granted, there's an unspoken rule not to shove our preferences down one anothers' throats.

do they note in the rec that it's slash/het? Because my interpretation of that comm has always been that it's used as a bit of a rec comm as well as a place to find specifically what one person is looking for - kind of a 'you said you wanted gen stories about space moles, and this is a great space mole story, though it has some Lorne/Cadman (Mcshep, John/Cam, Teyla/Elizabeth, whatever).' So it might not be exactly what you're looking for, but for someone else it might be, or you might decide to give it a try regardless.

If no-one's mentioning that, hey, this meets the outline of your request but also has x that you said you didn't want, then yeah, that's rude. Though I probably wouldn't agree that it's all coming from slashers, unless it's because they make up the majority. Obviously, I haven't scrutinised every request you've ever made to speak for certain on that.

Some do, and when they do it, I appreciate it very much. Saying "I know you didn't ask for this but it does partially meet your request" is absolutely okay and I don't mind having a look.

Most of them don't, though. My last request was "gen Generation Kill/SGA crossovers" and I got two gen recs... and the last one was simply "I only found this" and the link and the first thing I see is "McShep, implied Nate/Brad" in the header of the fic *head desks

I don't normally approve of blacklisting comms, but they're painting a frakking huge target "please please oh please do it" on themselves.

*hugs you*

Someone (I think it was the unfortunately absent [livejournal.com profile] asugar once told me that [livejournal.com profile] sgagenrefinders was originally created because people wanted to read something else than McShep. Go figure...
